*After the war between the states 1869 - first Freeman vote in Palestine Tx - notice the federal troops and little to no white people?
In addition to no women voters, there were few white voters. They were required to sign an oath and disclaim the Confederacy to vote. If they had served in the war, or were known to have supported the Confederacy they were stripped of their right to vote. Many people could not stomach signing the oath. Additionally, the candidates were Yankees, not local citizens. Not until the Yankee occupation ended in 1874-77 did local candidates control their government. It is a wonder our nation survived the Civil War.
The crimes committed against the southern people were unimaginable - great image to show the way it was….
The printing on the photo tells you what this is. It is Bob Rosborough’s personal photo of the car that Bonnie and Clyde stole from him in Marshall Texas.
Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
~ Robert Frost, Nothing Gold Can Stay (1923)
